All about Shey Phoksundo lake trek
A Shey Phoksundo lake is a glacial lake near Ringmo in the Dolpo region. It is one of the deepest lake in the country & a vital source of freshwater for downstream, with the highest waterfall(167M) in Nepal. The phoksundo trek is considered as one of the most beautiful & exotic tourist destination lying in the Dolpo region.
The lake, alpine meadows, and bogs provide habitat for a number of rare and vulnerable plants and animals, including the Snow Leopard, Musk deer and Grey or Tibetan Wolf.
Dolpo Trek region of western Nepal has only been open since 1988, and has been widely acclaimed as one of Nepal's best trekking regions.
The site has great cultural and religious importance, with the followers of Buddhism & Bon-Po religions, making the trekking adventurous & Cultural
This trek starts from Nepalgunj followed by a flight to Jhupal.
This is a special trek in one of Nepal's restricted areas and as such we have to pay the same levels of permit fees as for Mustang. However it is ideal for the keen walker who would like a wild experience away from the main trekking routes.
A representative from our office will meet you at the airport with Ski Guides Nepal Treks and Expedition banner and escort you to your hotel. Today you will have one hour flight to Nepalgunj in the southern of plains of Nepal. Nepalgunj is the biggest city of the midwestern region which share its southern border with India.
We take early morning 40 minutes flight to Juphal. From Juphal we start our trail by the riverside and pass Roop Ghar with the water mill and finally reach the village of Dunai (2150m). Dunai is the administrative center as well as main trading centre of the whole Dolpo Region
After breakfast, we leave Dunai and trek along the south bank of the Bheri River. We continue to follow the trail that goes towards Tarakot for our overnight camping
Leaving Tarakot we will follow the Tarap Chu River upstream and cross the same river twice. we will continue our descend journey with few climbs to reach Kanigaon - the winter residence of the Dho-Tarap people. The final push on the steep uphill trail finally brings us to Laini Odar, which is a wonderful camping site with a beautiful waterfall nearby.
As we head further from Laini Odar, we traverse through the trail through the deep gorges with scary cliffs above them. We now trek on the easy trail paved with wooden planks and flat stones that leads us to Chhyugar 3440m. Chhyugar lies at the bank of small stream which we cross and begin to trek along its western bank to Pibke or Nawarpani 3475m.
One of the most interesting days of Inner Dolpo trek is about to begin. The trek most of the times run along the bank of Tarap Khola switching sides frequently. Dho Tarap is a fascinating settlement that manifests the real attributes of Dolpo. This famous settlement of Dolpo nestles high above a wide valley and was a famous trading point to the traders of Tibet and Mustang in the ancient days. We will settle down our camps at Dho Tarap for the overnight stay.
Acclimatization is very crucial for avoiding mental and physical sickness in higher altitudes. So we are having a day rest at Dho Tarap. Dho Tarap is a highland settlement dotted with monasteries. So ask your guide or make suggestions to explore around Dho Tarap.
We will gradually gain high altitude with a scenic view of fascinating valleys. On the way to Numa La Base Camp we can see the dramatic views of Shering Gompa which is the house for the monks in the region. We will camp beneath Numa La pass at Numa La Base Camp.
Today we start early as our trekking leads for the crossing of Numa La Pass at 5310 meters. The demanding trek also rewards with the majestic views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Churen Himal. Also the view of fantastic snowcapped peak Norbung Kang dominates the trail. We will descend to reach Danighar for our overnight camping
Initially the trail to Baga La Pass gains elevation rapidly. The elevation of 600m is gained so rapidly that, this part of trek really demands extra efforts. As we arrive to the top of the pass, we witness the scared chortens. As we descend down the pass, we slide into deep ravine and cross the frozen stream to open space. The final push down is a beautiful meadow Temche 4000m.
Today we begin the trek, dropping down from Temche to Yak Kharka. At Yak Kharka, the trail branches into two. Descending trail drops down to Maduwa whereas; the ascending one traverses high towards Ringmo. The trail to Ringmo penetrates the lush vegetation of pines, junipers and cypress. This part of trek offers the stunning views of towering cliffs throughout the trek. Passing the highest waterfall in Nepal on the right, the trail finally stretches to Ringmo, a famous Bon settlement in the region. The final thirty minute downhill trek from Ringmo finally brings us to the mesmerizingly beautiful lake, Phoksundo. Overnight in the camps beside Phoksundo Lake.
Today we explore the area around the Ringmo magnificent Phoksundo Lake. First, we explore around Ringmo Village and head to Tshowa (the lake-shore Bon Monastery). The Gompa nestling a ridge top above Phoksundo Lake was built about 900 years ago. We also explore the wonderful natural sites and enjoy our nature tour.
After an hour long uphill climb we arrive atop a hill from where the river we chased earlier begins to diminish in size. However, the last view of Phoksundo Lake atop a hill is truly fascinating. Then we slide down for a while and resume the trek to Chepka. Before reaching Chepka, we begin to see the sign of tropical forest as bamboo forest and walnut trees come into our sight. Overnight in a camp at Chepka.
The trail to Juphal initially is wide before it arrives to the village of Kalagaonda. Beyond Kalagaonda, we the trek begins along the narrow path. Now it winds through beautiful fields of barley and wheat surrounded by strong trees that include walnut, peach and apricot. The final uphill steep climb stretches to Juphal, a large village with beautiful marketplace. Overnight at Juphal.
From Juphal we fly to Nepalgunj and then finally to Kathmandu. We stay overnight at Hotel.
Buffer day for flight delay and cancellation due to bad weather. You can spend this day walking around the shopping area of Thamel. We will have a final meal together in the evening.
